It is very common for adults, male and female alike, to have as many as 40 moles on their bodies. Moles typically appear in the childhood and adolescence stages of life, and often change in size, colour, and shape with age, and exposure to the sun. The presence of moles is more predominant in people who have a fair or lighter skin colour.
In most cases, a change in the appearance of a mole is not cause for concern, however, in others, it may be a sign of pre-cancerous cells or even skin cancer (melanoma). Therefore, it is critical that any mole which appears to be suspicious be assessed by a Dermatologist.
Skin tags, on the other hand, are harmless pieces of skin that are more prevalent in women and older adults. These unsightly formations generally appear on the face, neck, and back, and can cause discomfort when in contact with clothing.
Dr. Ken Alanen And His Team
Dr. Alanen, Director of Dermatology at YourDerm.ca, one of the most highly respected Dermatology and Mohs’ Skin Cancer Specialists in Canada, has successfully used removed thousands of moles for both cosmetic and medical reasons.
His knowledge, expertise, and experience have allowed him to quickly assess a mole and analyze it in our in-house laboratory for the existence of cancerous cells. Being a Dermatopathologist, as well, he has analyzed over 250,000 skin tests in his career.
Why Remove Moles And Skin Tags
In most cases moles and skin tags do not have to be removed, however, many of our patients have them removed for the following reasons:
- They are unsightly and appear in visible areas such as the face and neck
- They become irritated as a result of rubbing on clothing or getting caught on jewellery
- They are pre-cancerous or cancerous and must be removed for medical reasons
Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) Treatment
Liquid Nitrogen for mole removal, also called cryotherapy, is a quick, non-invasive process used to remove unwanted moles and skin tags from the skin. At YourDerm.ca, we have been highly successful in using LN2 to remove moles for cosmetic purposes, as well as abnormal or pre-cancerous lesions.
The LN2 treatment is a simple procedure that entails using a canister of pressurized Liquid Nitrogen, a very cold gas that approaches temperatures of -196 degrees Celsius, to freeze and eliminate the presence of moles and skin tags. Once the LN2 is sprayed on the affected area, it induces something which resembles frostbite.
During the procedure, patients report a mild stinging sensation during the freezing and thawing process, however, it will only persist for a few minutes. Immediately after the procedure, the area will become red, swollen, and may become sensitive to the touch. Shortly after, the area will blister, crust and scab. Within a few weeks, the scab will fall off and reveal new healthy skin.
Is There Any Downtime?
Patients can resume normal activities immediately after the treatment, however, the treated area may remain tender for a few days. Patients should avoid direct sunlight and soaking the area in water for at least 24 hours after treatment. We also recommend applying Revoderm Hydrating Facial Moisturizer which contains Vitamins E and C to keep the area hydrated and enhance healing.
Benefits of Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) Treatment
- Quick procedure performed at the YourDerm clinic
- Extremely high success rate
- Minimally invasive with little discomfort
- No downtime
