PicoSure Tattoo Removal

Treatments, No Skin Damage

What was I thinking?

A question we hear all the time at the YourDerm.ca Laser And Esthetics clinic when people inquire about tattoo removal.

What seemed like a great idea at the time, has now become an obstacle to employment, a continuous eyesore, and something you just want to get rid of. Alternatively, you may simply be tired of looking at the same piece of art, and want to clear the slate for a fresh, new tattoo.

The number of people getting tattooed is on the rise. In fact, recent statistics show that 45 million US citizens have a tattoo of which 9 million want them removed. If you fall into this category, you are certainly not alone. Don’t despair. There is a solution – PicoSure Laser Tattoo Removal!

PicoSure Laser Tattoo Removal Versus Q-Switch Technology

PicoSure is a breakthrough laser technology and the first and only picosecond laser used for tattoo removal. Operating at speeds measured in trillions of a second, no other laser device comes close.

In the past, a technology called Q-Switch lasers was the only alternative for effective laser tattoo removal. This technology is based on delivering pulsating heated energy at one billionth of a second, which is now considered slow by industry standards.

At that speed, Q-Switch devices tend to burn the skin and leave areas of discoloration.

On the other hand, the PicoSure Laser, 9 years in the making, is the greatest advancement in laser tattoo removal technology to enter the market in many years. The PicoSure device delivers energy at a speed of 1 picosecond or one trillionth of a second – much faster than its Q-Switch counterpart.

Due to this shortened time frame, the PicoSure Laser is highly effective and will not burn the skin or leave discoloration.

How Does PicoSure Tattoo Removal Work?

The PicoSure Laser uses a proprietary PressureWave Technology which delivers rapid pulses of energy into the tattoo ink, creating pressure that breaks the ink down into powder-like particles. These particles are then rapidly absorbed into the lymphatic system, and efficiently eliminated by the body.

The treatment has proven to be effective on all tattoos including previously treated tattoos where dark blue and green ink could not be removed using other technologies

The PicoSure Procedure?

Depending on the size of the tattoo, each PicoSure tattoo removal session will last about 30 minutes.  It begins with an application of topical numbing cream to alleviate any pain or discomfort during the procedure. The PicoSure Laser device is moved over the tattoo, delivering the energy required to break down the tattoo ink. Most patients report very little discomfort and liken the sensation to that of a rubber band being lightly snapped on the skin.

Although most normal activities can be resumed after the treatment, it is recommended that the treated area remain covered with the dressing provided and be kept clean and dry for a day or two in order to prevent infection.

Additionally, patients should refrain from bathing and avoid any strenuous activity or exercise for at least 24 hours. After 48 hours we suggest applying RevoDerm Advanced Scar Gel our  Dermatologist formulated medical grade silicone, ideal for any post-laser procedure.

What Results To Expect

The results of the PicoSure Tattoo Removal process vary from person to person and are largely dependent on the colors used in the tattoo, type of ink, and the age of the tattoo. Scarring from the original tattoo procedure or from previous laser removal treatments may also affect the results.

Dark colors such as blues and blacks will typically fade much faster than lighter colors such as reds and whites. Most patients begin to see results after the first treatment, however, some may have to wait until a few additional future treatments are completed.

Due to the many factors which require discussion prior to the PicoSure Tattoo Removal treatment, it is important to schedule a complimentary consultation with one of our PicoSure Tattoo Removal specialists.

How Many Treatments Are Required?

Unlike other laser tattoo removal procedures which can take up to 20 treatment sessions, the PicoSure Tattoo Removal process has proven to deliver better results in about one-half to one-third the number of sessions. Depending on the size and type of tattoo, our typical patient averages a minimum of 3 to 5 Picosure sessions to achieve desired results.

Although the skin on the treatment area will heal quite quickly, it is essential that the time between sessions is at least 6 weeks. After the ink is shattered, the elimination of the ink particles through the lymphatic system takes time to leave the area. Administering a PicoSure treatment too soon will not speed up the process as it will again treat the previously shattered ink particles.

Am I A Good Candidate?

Because the PicoSure Tattoo Removal procedure relies on detecting pigment, it is most effective where there is the contrast between the color of the ink and skin color. Therefore, those with fair to medium skin can be treated safely and effectively with the PicoSure technology. Individuals with darker skin run the risk of hyperpigmentation, a condition that leaves light or white patches on the skin.

Every tattoo is unique containing different colors, different volumes of ink, and different types of ink. Additionally, each individual has their own unique skin type and skincare regiment.

If you are tired of that unsightly tattoo and have been putting off getting it removed, schedule a complimentary consultation with one of our medically trained PicoSure Tattoo Removal specialists to determine whether you are the right candidate for the PicoSure procedure.
