Cortisone Injections For Acne Bumps And Scars

If you suffer from Cystic Acne, you know how debilitating it can be when a breakout strikes without warning. Knowing that there is no quick fix to make it disappear right away, can leave you feeling powerless.

In addition, the pain can be excruciating, and once it arrives, it can stay for a very long time, destroying your self-confidence, self-image, and crippling your ability to socialize or face anyone.

At, we have helped thousands of patients who have suffered from Cystic Acne, reduce the number of flare-ups, eliminate the blemishes and bumps, reduce pain, and alleviate the risk of permanent scarring, using Cortisone Injections in conjunction with our recommended topical and oral medications.

What Is Cystic Acne

Cystic Acne is the most severe form of acne which originates deep below the surface of the skin, and stems from a rupture of the follicle wall, giving way to leakage of infected debris into the dermis. Cystic acne is typically found on the face, neck, shoulders, and back.

Patients who suffer from Cystic Acne develop acne cysts that manifest as inflamed breakouts on the surface of the skin. Common characteristics of acne cysts include:

  • Large red lesions which can approach 1-2 centimeters
  • Extremely pain
  • Soft lumps filled with fluid

Cystic acne is linked to heredity, and although found in some teenage girls and young women, it is most commonly found in adolescent boys and young adult men.

As with most other forms of acne, cystic acne is caused by:

  • Excessive oil gland activity
  • Dead skin cells in pores
  • High level of acne-causing bacteria Propionibacteria (P-bacteria)

Conditions And Areas Treated By Cortisone Injections

  • Cystic Acne
  • Face and neck
  • Chest and shoulders
  • Back

Cortisone Injections are not effective on regular pimples because the pus which is present in a pimple can cause cortisone to dilute and make it ineffective. The sole purpose of a Cortisone Injection is to shrink the swollen walls of acne cysts, and in turn reduce inflammation.

Before And After

How Does The Cortisone Injection Procedure Work?

Cortisone Injection treatments, technically called Intralesional Corticosteroid Injections are performed by our lead Dermatologist Dr. Ken Alanen, at the clinic.

Although the procedure has little or no pain, it often begins with an application of numbing cream on the area to be treated, to reduce any potential pain or discomfort. A tiny microneedle is then used to inject a diluted solution of cortisone directly into the blemishes and repeated until the entire area has been treated.

Cortisone is an anti-inflammatory substance that works by reducing the inflammation of the walls housing the cysts. It is not an antibiotic and therefore will not kill the p-bacteria which is a primary cause of acne.

More About Cortisone Injections For Acne

 When Will I See Results?

Once the cortisone is injected into the blemish, inflammation will begin to subside immediately. Within 24 hours, blemishes will begin to soften and shrink, while the bumps and scars will begin to flatten out.

Depending on the patient and severity of the cystic acne, the imperfections may not disappear entirely, however, they will be substantially smaller, less painful, and the redness will fade.

Cortisone Injection After Care Plan

Cortisone Injection therapy is most effective when administered in conjunction with topical and/or oral medications. After the procedure, Dr. Alanen or one of our medically trained specialists will provide an after-care plan tailored to your specific situation.

Is There Any Downtime?

Most patients resume regular activities shortly after the treatment, however, redness and mild swelling will generally persist for4-6 hours. We do recommend protecting the treated area for24 hours and controlling the swelling by applying cold compresses as needed.
