Most people, however, don’t realize that eyelashes also provide a practical function as well. They protect our eyes from the sun, repel perspiration, trap dust and dirt, and have a built-in reflex to close the eyelid if an object threatens the eye.
Unfortunately, some people suffer from a medical condition called hypotrichosis, a lack of eyelash growth. Hypotrichosis begins as thinning of the eyelashes and ultimately results in an entire loss of the eyelash. The condition differs from alopecia in that there is generally very little hair or eyelashes, to begin with.

What Is LATISSE?
LATISSE is a prescribed medication available only through a Medical Doctor, which has proven to grow your own eyelashes grow longer, thicker, and darker. Its primary ingredient is a 0.03% concentration of bimatoprost, a medical formula that was originally developed to treat glaucoma.
Allergan, the manufacturer of LATISSE recognized that patients who were using the bimatoprost eye drop formula for eye issues also showed signs of longer, fuller, and darker eyelashes. This triggered Allergan to pursue the research and testing of bimatoprost for eyelash growth, which ultimately led to FDA approval in 2008.
How does it work?
LATISSE is a liquid solution that is applied to the base of the upper eyelash line using sterile applicators – very similar to applying eyeliner. The LATISSE solution is rapidly absorbed into the hair follicle below the surface of the skin, which stimulates the growth of the eyelash.
Eyelashes, like other hair on the body, undergo a series of phases. It is believed that LATISSE has a direct effect on lengthening the anagen phase, the phase where hair growth takes place. By increasing the growing season, so to speak, eyelash growth is optimized.
We recommend applying LATISSE on a nightly basis for 8 weeks and in some cases up to 16 weeks prior to bedtime. This will be discussed during the pre-treatment consultation.
Although the risk of infection is extremely low, it is important to ensure that environment where LATISSE is kept clean and sterile. Applicators must only be used once, the tip must never touch the top of the LATISSE bottle, and hands must be clean. Additionally, make-up and contact lenses must be removed, and your face must be thoroughly washed.
Clinically Proven Results

How soon will I see the results?
Because the LATISSE eyelash enhancement treatment works at the base of the hair, results are very gradual and seen over a period of time. In the pre-treatment consultation, we set the expectations appropriately to ensure that overzealous patients do not get frustrated.
After 2 months of nightly usage, patients will generally see visibly thicker and fuller eyelashes. Continued use may improve the results, however, if desired results have been achieved, we may recommend maintaining the results with less frequent applications.
It is important to note that stopping the LATISSE treatment altogether will cause the eyelashes to revert back to their original state in a relatively short period of time.
Is LATISSE Eyelash Enhancement Right For Me?
In general, the LATISSE eyelash enhancement treatment is excellent for anyone suffering from hypotrichosis, and a great alternative to eyelash dying or false eyelashes.
Following is a list of characteristics we look for in a patient:
- Patients who are unhappy with the thickness, fullness, and color of their eyelashes
- Suffer from hypotrichosis
- Are in good general health
- Are motivated to commit to daily treatment for a period of at least 8 weeks
- Recognize that results vary from patient to patient
- Understand that eyelashes will revert back to their original state if a regular maintenance program is not undertaken
Although most of our patients qualify for the treatment, a number of factors including women who are pregnant or nursing, certain medications, and other medical conditions may disqualify an individual partaking in the LATISSE treatment.
